The Otago Racing Club has successfully introduced two major race days in the last ten years; Melbourne Cup Day in November and the Christmas at the Races Meeting in Cromwell. Both these events now sit in the top ten attended race days in New Zealand with over 5000 patrons in attendance at each of these meetings.

Enhanced image in the broader racing market
The Otago Racing Club is the principal racing club in the southern half of the South Island and stages 13 race days a year, at two venues, Wingatui in Dunedin and Roundhill Racecourse in Cromwell. It is the only Club outside of Christchurch to stage a Premier Race Meeting, which is scheduled on Champions Day in February each year. Prize money distributed on this day is around $350,000.
